Product Description

MoltBot (sometimes referred to as Moltbot or Moltbook) was a brief intermediate name used during the renaming process of the OpenClaw project from Clawdbot, existing for only about three days (January 27 to January 29, 2026).

The "Molt" in "MoltBot" (molting) symbolizes the process of a lobster shedding its shell to grow, aligning with OpenClaw's lobster brand image. The name was inspired by the biological characteristic of lobsters growing through molting, suggesting that the project was undergoing a "transformation." However, founder Peter Steinberger quickly found the name "never quite rolled off the tongue," leading to another renaming to "OpenClaw" just three days later.

This rapid second renaming caused some confusion and discussion within the community, with some describing the experience as "three names in one week, zero chill." Although MoltBot existed for a very short time, it became an integral part of OpenClaw's brand evolution history and a classic case study in brand management for open-source projects.
